One of the problems with RS485 networks is that the end of the communication lines must be terminated with resistors with the proper value to obtain maxiumum signal quality and minimal reflection. Resistors are relatively large components on a printed circuit board.

To overcome this problem, Linear Technologies has released the LTC2854 and LTC2855 RS485 receivers which contain an internal switchable 120 Ohm termination resistor. The tranceivers are designed to operate from a 3.3Volt supply.
