Op de meeste randapparatuur wordt de 36 pins centronics connector toegepast. Van beide connectors is de pin out hier aangegeven. De kabel maakt gebruik van de parallelle poort, waardoor het mogelijk is hogere snelheden te halen dan met een seri\u00eble verbinding, met dezelfde lage investering. De kabel is ondermeer geschikt voor de volgende software.<\/p>\n\n<ul><li>Laplink van Travelling software<\/li><li>MS-DOS v 6.xx InterLink<\/li><li>Windows 95, 98 en ME directe kabel verbinding<\/li><li>Norton Commander<\/li><li>Norton Ghost<\/li><\/ul>\n\n<p>Omdat de parallelle poort op een computer vooral was ontworpen om printers mee te verbinden met eenrichtings communicatie is een truc gebruik om volwaardige communicatie te verkrijgen tussen bijde computers. Vijf fout- en statusmelding ingangen zijn geherdefinieerd als data inputs. In plaats van volledige bytes te lezen leest het communicatieprogramma deze vijf bits en combineert meerdere groepen data terug naar bytes. Om dit te kunnen doen hebben beide programma&#8217;s een connector met doorlussingen op de parallelle poort nodig. Helaas is de pin layout van beide pluggen niet gelijk.
